Don't Waste the Storm

Written by Betty B.

“Troubled waters came my way. The angry storm drew near.” That’s the first line of a song I sing. A few weeks ago, Dick asked me to sing it. I thought of the storms we were going through. In Mark 4:35-41 the Lord in verse 35 said, “Let us pass over to the other side.” It was Jesus’ idea for them to go. In verse 37 it says a great storm came up. Do you think Jesus knew about this before He took them across in a ‘little ship’? Of course He did. He’s the God of the winds and storms. Sometimes He uses drastic measures to get our attention. It’s such a joy to know that my Lord knows just what I need. They went looking for Jesus first thing when they found Him asleep in verse 38 they said, “Master carest though not that we perish?”

God loves us. He knows every storm we are in. He is with us in every storm. When He arose in verse 39 He rebuked the winds and with just a spoken word from the Lord, “Peace be still” there was calm. When I feel I cannot cope with this life’s troubled seas, I call on Him whose voice can still much greater storms than these.

Verse 40-41 are amazing verses. Jesus says to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” Do you think that’s why Jesus took them through the storm? Verse 41, “What manner of man is this that even the wind and sea obey him?” I think they learned who He was. They learned about faith. There’s a lesson to be learned in every storm we are going through. The Master of the storm is teaching us. Are we learning? Don’t waste the storm.

The story didn’t stop there. I’m sure that story comforted a lot of people the disciples met. Hurting people, lost people, discouraged people. Do you know any of them? Can you be a help to someone who’s going through something you’ve been through? Don’t waste the storm. Be a testimony of the blessing of God. Share with others.

The master was sleeping. Prayer will wake the Master. Praise will wake the Master. He’s waiting to be in the midst of our storms. He wants a relationship with us. For us to witness for Him, to lean on Him and trust Him in time of need. He wants our love because He loves us. Learn from the Master. Glorify Him through your storm. Don’t waste the storm. Learn from it.
